Do You Have Room

This Holiday season Kenz was asked to sing Do You Have Room twice.

Once for our new ward's Young Men/Young Women Christmas Activity.
And then Emily Briggs if she'd sing in for her ward in Suncrest for their Christmas Program.
She worked with a new accompanist Paul Tonks.  It turned out beautiful
Of course I didn't film the actual performance since it was a sacrament program
but I did film part of the rehearsal.
Such a pretty song!

Kenz turns 20

Kenz got to sing at a YM/YW activity on her birthday.
She and Wyatt drove from Provo and ran over to a neighbors house so that she could sing Do You Have Room (Kim Granger accompanied).
This was the first time Wyatt had heard her sing.
She didn't get to warm up and struggled a bit (she will hate that I said that) but it was still beautiful.
Then she came home and opened gifts.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY KENZ!

Concert of Hope

Kenz was asked to perform at a Memorial Concert honoring 2 students
(click HERE to read about the accident)

Kenz met the darling three students that survived the crash before the concert began.
Lauren Fenton's mom takes a picture with Kenz before the show.

Kenz spent a lot of time trying to decide what was appropriate to sing.
It was supposed to be a night to celebrate yet both parents and students were invited.
The National Parks were there to get the crowd dancing and singing
- which they did and it was AWESOME!
So Kenz decided to keep her set a little more reverent... so to speak.
A big thank you to Sarah Davies (Piano Place) for accompanying her on piano.

Kenz started with The Dreamer since she loves the song's message and it is up beat.
She mashed up Saturn and Here Comes the Sun knowing that those two bands were favorites of the two students who died.
And closed the night with Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

I was proud of her performance.
Her heart was so touched by the families and she admitted after
that she struggled to keep her emotions in check -
wiping away tears and trying to clear her nose to be able to sing
in the middle of all three of her songs.
Some performances mean a little more... this was one of those.

Trip to LA for a New Job?

Kenz has been offered a FANTASTIC opportunity to work in LA for the next few years.
She was invited to come out and see if it was a good fit.
She was there from July 19-22
I was in St. George with my boys so Grandpa Earl (my dad) filled in for me.
She absolutely LOVED the job and can't wait to get started.

Miss Draper Pageant Performance

Kenz was asked to sing the National Anthem and an original song for the
Miss Draper Pageant.

She has always been so grateful for the support
she has received from the Draper community that she happily accepted the invitation.

She got there at 3 pm to sound check but none of the sound guys were there.
No biggie.

She got there at 6 pm to sound check and it was a pretty chaotic moment.
Those that have worked with Kenz know she doesn't really need a sound check
and can do a lot of her sound all by herself.
So that is was she chose to do.
She decided not rely on the sound tech but just use her own amp and mic.
Easy!!

After getting all set up back stage
and assigning someone to help her get her equipment on stage for her,
she came out to chat with me.
She kept saying... "I have a bad feeling about this."
I reassured her that it was just National Anthem nerves talking.
She does NOT enjoy sing the National Anthem.

The show started and she sang the anthem (in a key she had never tried before) but sounded GREAT!
(She had her note in her head and then someone tried to talk to her before hitting the stage and her note was gone....
This & the fact that she is a perfectionist when it comes to her music is why she doesn't like singing this song.)

Then I started getting text from her.
K: "Mom.  Is something burning on the top right corner of the curtain?"
Me: "I don't see it but I can smell it."
K: They're calling the fire dept.
I found it.
It's actually on the other side.
Lights on a curtain.
I don't want to go on until it's fixed"
Me:  "it'll be fine"

And she is announced to come and sing.

It sounded great.
A mash up of her original song One Good Reason
(click here to listen and/or buy
and the classic Stand By Me.
Half way through the song,
the audience is laughing and she has no idea why.
Broke my heart.

Note from Kenz:
Congratulations to Miss Draper 2016 and cute Rachel Parkinson (Miss Draper Teen) and everyone else involved!  And shoutout my special friends who joined me on stage as well.

By the end of the song, she figured it out.
Several firefighters decided to walk behind her as she was singing to check out the fire.
Our sweet Mayor Troy Walker apologize profusely
stating the firemen insisted on taking the quickest and straightway route to the fire.

She did her best to cover up the crazy moment but was still horribly embarrassed.
She had planned to stay and try to sell some of her merchandise after the pageant
but made a quick exit with a few tears in her eyes.

I personally was SO proud of her
grace under pressure
(I would have said "fire" but there have been way to many jokes and puns about this one. - again poor kenz).

I know someday she will laugh about this one.  Maybe not today but someday.
